Fitrockr & Garmin support Hypatia II simulation journey to Mars.

Feb 21, 2025

Fitrockr & Garmin support Hypatia II simulation journey to Mars by providing the technology to monitor & assess physiological data of a female-led organization composed of a multidisciplinary, intergenerational team from Catalonia and Spain.

The Project

The mission of the Hypatia Mars Association is driven by three core objectives, each designed to bring space exploration and science closer to society while promoting diversity and excellence in STE(A)M careers:

  • Advancing research excellence in space exploration.
  • Engaging society through science and outreach activities.
  • Promoting female role models in STE(A)M careers, particularly among girls and young women, to enhance representation and visibility across all fields of knowledge.

Hypatia Mars is a groundbreaking project aimed at inspiring the next generation, focusing especially on young girls and other underrepresented groups.

Juan R Gonzalez, Associate Research Professor and coordinator of Health Analytics Hub at ISGlobal, expressed his excitement for the mission and collaboration, stating,

“As a data scientist and bioinformatician, I am excited to be part of this groundbreaking mission alongside Garmin and Fitrockr. While their advanced technology will allow us to monitor key physiological metrics, our team will also measure omic data (genomics and metabolomics) to assess the broader biological impacts of space travel. By combining these omic insights with the data made accessible by the Garmin Health Ecosystem and Fitrockr, we can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the effects of long-term space missions on the human body. This collaboration is a perfect synergy that enhances our ability to advance space research while promoting diversity and excellence in STE(A)M careers. Collaborating with Garmin and Fitrockr enhances our mission’s impact and potential to make a lasting contribution to space exploration and society.”

The Mission

The ‘Hypatia’ missions consist of two-week expeditions to the Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS), a Martian analog station situated in the Utah desert, United States. During these missions, crews engage in high-quality space-related research and meticulously simulate their day-to-day life on Mars. Confined to a small space and deprived of the luxuries and resources of Earth, they experience the challenges that astronauts may face on the Red Planet.

These missions also serve as a platform to showcase female STE(A)M role models. Children and youth encounter real and relatable examples of contemporary scientists from various disciplines –including astrophysics, mathematics, engineering, and biology– among the crew members. The stories of these individuals have the potential to ignite inspiration in future generations, encouraging them to pursue careers in these fields.

The Mars Desert Research Station

The Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) is a Mars analogous station operated by the Mars Society, an international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting research and exploration on the Red Planet, located in the heart of the desert of Utah, in the United States.

The facilities of the MDRS, connected by tunnels to ease the mobility of the crew, are:

  • Habitat (Hab): two-floor, eight-meter-diameter building where the crew lives and plans the extra vehicular activities (EVA).
  • Astronomical Observatories: two infrastructures, one dedicated to the observation of the Sun and the other to the study of the night sky.
  • GreenHab: a greenhouse that allows agricultural research and plant cultivation for human consumption.
  • Geology and Microbiology Lab: scientific dome of seven meters in diameter for research.
  • RAM: Repair and maintenance module.

How Garmin Factors In

Garmin will supply state-of-the-art smartwaches to the Hypatia crew. These devices, Garmin Venu® 3, are equipped with advanced sensors capable of capturing a wide range of physiological metrics, including:

  • Daily Activity Data
  • Steps
  • Heart Rate
  • BBI
  • HRV
  • Stress
  • Sleep
  • Activities
  • Body Battery
  • Respiration
  • Skin Temperature

Garmin smartwatches are specifically designed for high-performance environments, making them ideal for the demanding conditions of the Mars simulation.

Jörn Watzke, Senior Director Garmin Health, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating,

“We are thrilled to support the Hypatia mission through the utilization of our smartwatches and Garmin Health Standard SDK integration. This collaboration underscores the commitment of Garmin to empowering innovative projects that advance scientific research and inspire future generations.“

Fitrockr’s Role and Contribution

Fitrockr Health Solutions will supply their leading Wearable Data Research & Healthcare platform to the Hypatia team. The Fitrockr software will be used to manage, configure, extract and assess the digital biomarkers collected via the Garmin smartwatches. Each crew member will be wearing the Garmin Venu® 3 device to record 24/7 physiological data. The Fitrockr app will wirelessly extract the data from the devices and make it available in the Fitrockr Research & Control Center to researchers, allowing them to monitor and analyze the data during and post mission.

The mission will also be utilizing the Fitrockr Survey module to record subjective daily feedback from the crew. At set intervals, the Fitrockr platform will push out questions to the crew members who will answer them on a smartphone. The feedback will be monitored and assessed by the Hypatia research team.

Joerg Fehlinger, CEO of Fitrockr, shared his excitement, stating,

“Fitrockr is honored to contribute to such a visionary project. Our platform’s ability to analyze physiological and psychological data will provide invaluable insights in physiological, psychological, and social challenges of living and working on Mars.“
